2012 Willow Meadows Neighborhood Picnic plans near completion

Each year, the Willow Meadows Civic Club hosts a fall picnic for residents of the Willow Meadows neighborhood. This year, the picnic will be held on Sunday, September 30th, from 1pm to 5pm at Willow Park. It is hard to believe that we are that close to cool weather!!

This picnic serves as our kickoff for National Night out activities later in the week. National Night Out is a community-police awareness-raising event, held the first Tuesday of October. National Night Out is designed to heighten crime prevention awareness; generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime and security programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know that our neighborhood is organized and fighting back. Along with the traditional outside lights and front porch vigils, please take the time to meet and know your neighbors. The very best way that we have to enhance our security efforts and thwart crime is by watching out for each other.

As we have for the past several years, there will be free food and drinks, live entertainment, fun and games, and an opportunity to meet your friends, neighbors, and local business merchants in the enjoyable and casual setting of Willow Park. If you have never been to one of these picnics, you need to mark your calendars and plan to attend. This picnic is something that should not be missed. We will even give you a free ride to and from the picnic.

Attendance at the picnic has been so overwhelming the past few years that parking at the park has become a real issue. To meet this challenge, the Willow Meadows Baptist Church has graciously donated the use of their parking lot as a remote site for parking. One of our sponsors - Austin Landscaping, has agreed to provide the transportation to and from the picnic and the WMBC parking lot, and what a ride it is! Our very own old time trolley, reminiscent of bygone days, will serve as your transport. So don't become frustrated with the congested parking at the park, simply park at the church, and catch the ride to the main entrance of the park. This park and ride service will run from 1:00pm to 5:00pm on a continuous basis.

Central to the picnic is the commercial expo, where many of our local business partners promote their products and services. Each of these exhibitors has financially contributed to the success of the picnic, and many have taken on additional rolls, sponsoring specific features of the picnic. It is these partners that have made this picnic the event that it is. Please take the time to stop by each tent and thank them for their continued support.

Each year, we try to provide a bit of entertainment for everyone. This year, don't be surprised if someone walks up to you and breaks out it song! It is probably the barbershop quartet FX. - Just wanting to spread a little music at the picnic. And WOW!! What a great group this is - singing some of the classic music of our times, all in four part harmony!! Foot tapping is permitted. If that were not enough, the guy carrying the fiddle on his shoulder is probably part of the Allen's Landing Bluegrass Band -- Enjoy some of the American roots music represented by bluegrass!! Not only is foot tapping allowed, but if you feel the urge to get up and dance, just do it!! . This professional entertainment has been generously underwritten by David Montz of ReMax Realty-Executives and Randy Leonhardt of Laraby Financial Group. Each year we also have local talent from the neighborhood.

What is a picnic without fun and games for everyone? Richard Ray of John Daugherty Realtors will be sponsoring the "moonwalk" for our younger picnic goers. If that is not enough, look for the face painter or the roving balloon artist along park trail. If you are too big for the bounce house or too old to get your face painted, perhaps a nice friendly game of horseshoes, checkers or chess under the shade trees is more appealing. The park also has tennis courts, tether ball, and a volley ball court if you are so inclined.

After a strenuous game of checkers, what better way to unwind than with ice cream!! Ice cream treats that is. Randall Doe of Heritage Properties thought so too, and has made sure that there will be an ice cream cart with free ice cream treats for everyone. Speaking of special treats, along the trail past the commercial expo, an adventurous explorer will most likely find additional snacks and treats provided by our various vendors. The secret word at Tejano Salsa and Tamales is "John sent me!" That will probably work at several other vendors also!!

But don't spoil your appetite on the snacks. Each year, the Willow Meadows Civic Club offers up a delicious (and free) helping of food for the residents of Willow Meadows. This year our picnic will be professionally catered by Gabby's Barbeque, serving a traditional plate of sliced beef brisket, sausage, beans, and potato salad, along with all the trimmin’s! There should be plenty of food for everyone, but as the old proverb goes - “The early bird gets the worm". Of course, because some of us may be on special diets or, in the classic tradition of a picnic you can pack a picnic lunch with your favorite foods and still enjoy a relaxing afternoon at the park. Please remember that park rules prohibit alcohol and glass containers. Susan Brock of Brock and Foster Real Estate and C.J. Brock of C.J. Brock Insurance will be supplying ice cold bottled water.

This year’s picnic is shaping up to be the "best ever". Mark your calendars today. When your neighbors start talking about how great the picnic was, don't be the one that says “I just couldn't make it” - This is the must attend event for this fall. See ya there!!
