HCDE holds line on tax increase

The Harris County Department of Education voted to adopt the effective tax rate for 2012 - which is the rate that would provide HCDE with approximately the same amount of revenue it had last year on properties taxed in both years.  For the average taxpayer this means the rate will be closer to 1% higher than last year, not the almost 8% increase HCDE was originally considering. (While total revenues to HCDE should be the same as they were last year, not including new properties added to the tax rolls, the rate increased slightly due to a decrease in property values.)

Security Response to Suspicious Vehicle/Persons Involving Children

An incident occurred in the 9300 block of Cliffwood Dr. at approximately 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 2, 2012.  Two Hispanic males, estimated ages 20 to 27, occupying a gray-colored, 4-door sedan (make unknown), attempted to lure two young girls into their vehicle.

Heavy Trash Pick-Up Schedules are Changing Effective Nov. 2012

Effective November 1, 2012, the monthly heavy trash (tree waste/junk waste) pick-up date for our neighborhood will change to the 3rd Wednesday.  Tree Waste and junk waste collection will still occur in alternating months, odd-numbered months for tree waste (January, March, May, July, September, November) and even-numbered months for junk waste (February, April, June, August, October, December), but on the new heavy trash pick-up day designated for our neighborhood.  Please note that collection day schedules for other Solid Waste services such as garbage, yard waste trimmings and recycling collection WILL NOT change.

Suspicious Solicitor Detained, Identified, and Given Warning

At 12:50 p.m. on September 13th, WM Security Patrol Officer Matthew Ham responded to a call from a resident on Willowgrove Dr. concerning a suspicious solicitor.  Officer Ham found the clean cut, blond, 19 year old male, who smelled of marijuana, wearing a yellow T-shirt and blue shorts on Knickerbocker and obtained his ID.  The suspect is a Tennessee resident with previous arrests in Tennessee, Illinois, and Texas for criminal trespass, assault, disorderly conduct, etc.  The suspect admitted to a lifestyle where he drinks alcohol, smokes marijuana, and does pills.

Lacking any compelling evidence or other complaints it could not be proved that he did anything illegal in Willow Meadows, so he was released but warned to leave WM and not return.  Officer Ham called his handler, who was in the Greenspoint area at that time, to pick him up.  Officer Ham learned from the suspect that this handler had dropped off as many as 30 such young people in various neighborhoods around Houston, including Willowbend to our south, but only one in WM.  The suspect went to the Kroger Grocery to await being retrieved by his handler.

Let this serve as a reminder that all solicitors in the neighborhood, no matter how innocent or suspicious they may appear, should be reported to our Security Patrol so that they can be thoroughly checked out.

Roof Repair Scam - Fraud Alert

Two Hispanic-looking males calling themselves “Gino” and “Bob”, have been distributing flyers in our neighborhood and surrounding neighborhoods (Willowbend and across the railroad tracks to our east) touting the services of “Gino & Bob Roofing & Gutters, Inc.” at phone number 256-652-0841 (Huntsville, Alabama, cell service). The flyer is a modification of a flyer from Rivas Roofing, a well-known, nearby business. These men claim to live nearby and apparently worked for Rivas Roofing for a short time and stole some of their flyers to use as prototypes for this scam.

These men get your money up front and provide little or no work in return. A Willow Meadows resident reports being defrauded of $800 in one such scam on Friday. They have been posting flyers and “working” the area for several days and were still at it on Saturday, September 1st.

Keep your eyes out for these men, do not do business with them, and alert the Willow Meadows Security Patrol at 713-447-0200 if you see them.

Descriptions of the two Hispanic-looking males:
“Gino”: 20-25 yrs old, ~6 ft tall, ~220 lb, chubby, short black hair, light mustache, text tattoo on one arm
“Bob”: 50+ yrs old, 5 ft 10 in, 200 lb, light mustache, balding
Vehicle 1-“Gino’s”: White Ford pickup with Alabama plates, tool box, covered bed
Vehicle 2-“Bob’s”: Brown Ford Ranger with Michigan plates, ladder in back
