Free Tax Preparation for those affected by Flood Disaster

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced on April 26, 2016 that Texas storm victims, including those in the Houston area, will have until September 1, 2016 to file their returns and pay any taxes due following the disaster declaration for individual assistance issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Beyond Careers is a partner with The Internal Revenue Service -Stakeholder Partnerships, Education & Communication (IRS-SPEC) and provides free income tax preparation assistance with IRS-Certified tax preparers through our mobile Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site by offering these services to taxpayers who did not get their tax returns completed by April 15th or need an amended return.


FEMA Disaster Assistance Now Available

Disaster Recovery Centers (DRC) opening throughout the Houston area at Noon on Monday, May 2nd, to help survivors of April's devastating flooding register for disaster assistance, as well as speak directly with FEMA personnel regarding their disaster assistance claim.

Disaster survivors do not need to visit a DRC to file for FEMA assistance, but help will be available to help answer questions regarding the FEMA disaster assistance process, rental resources, explain written communication from FEMA and connect survivors with available help, services and information.  Survivors can register for disaster assistance by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or by visiting DisasterAssistance.gov.  TTY users can call 1-800-462-7585. VRS users can call 711 and connect to 1-800-621-3362.


Harris County Flood Control

Willow Meadows Civic Club, in conjunction with United Orthodox Synagogues and Willow Meadows Baptist Church, will be hosting an event featuring representatives of Harris County Flood Control. They will make a presentation on May 3rd at 6:30pm at United Orthodox Synagogues in Freedman Hall. Seating for this event is limited. This will be an opportunity for our neighborhood to learn about Project Brays, its timeline and benefits, and ask questions related to the control of flood waters in and around our neighborhood. City Asks Residents to Remove Cars from Streets for Storm Debris Collections

The City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department is asking residents to remove all parked vehicles from the streets in the areas hit by Monday's storm to facilitate easy access of the heavy equipment during debris collection.  Debris should be placed not in the road, but rather close to the side of the road away from mailboxes, trees, meters, fire hydrants and other structures.  In addition, agencies assisting with the recovery effort are asked to identify off-street parking for their volunteers.

If heavy trucks are unable to pass safely along the streets, the City will not be able to remove the debris.

Home Elevation Grant Opportunity Announcement

The City of Houston, in partnership with the Texas Water Development Board, will submit a grant application on behalf of interested homeowners to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for the Flood Mitigation Assistance (FMA) Grant.  This grant will request funds for Elevation of Existing Homes damaged during the 2015 and 2016 flooding events.

Who is Eligible?

Only Homeowners who have flood insurance.  The flood insurance must be from the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and be effective at the time of the grant application.
